Project Title: Manufacturing and machining methods for hybrid vehicle motors

Academic Supervisor: Professor Matt Marshall and Professor Rob Dwyer-Joyce

AMRC Supervisor: Dr Ben Kitcher

The project is sponsored by Ricardo plc. Ricardo is a global engineering, strategic and environmental consultancy. The overall purpose of the project is to design a new, high-speed synchronous reluctance motor and to manufacture a prototype by summer 2020. The project is split into three main research areas. The electrical design of the motor, the bearing and lubrication design and the manufacturing process design. Innovative manufacturing techniques will be required to achieve the design requirements at the target unit cost for the automotive sector. The machinability and a range of manufacturing techniques for proposed materials will be explored as well as the creation of process models for the material processing. These physics-based models will be validated experimentally.
